Debut album entitled ‘The calling quiet’ on Argonauta Records for the British band Wolves In Winter, born in 2020. Their sound is very interesting and can rightly be placed in the doom metal genre, although deviations into other genres are frequent.

Doom is one hundred per cent of their musical construction, with powerful, slowed-down and very clean guitar riffs, which go very well with a very well-balanced rhythm section. Then there is the voice, which is a discourse in itself, as it is perhaps the real conductor of the orchestra, since it leads all the changes in speed, atmosphere and intensity.

The songs on the album are an excellent example of how one can doom metal while rooted in tradition and at the same time manage to give it a very modern, very gothic feel, with even moments of pop melodies under carpets of guitars and bass and drum turns. The songs are all of long duration and are very well composed, and in all of them you can breathe that beautiful, typically British gothic air, with those very special melodies that Wolves In Winter make their own and make them sound very good.

Despite the band’s debut the members are veterans of the UK underground metal scene, having played in bands such as Solstice, Lazarus Blackstar, Monolith Cult and Slammer. As a debut, this is a record that far surpasses expectations, a high quality gothic doom record that engages very well, thanks to some very good melodic choices, and that something extra that British bands like Wolves In Winter have.
